The Sunario System
The operating framework of Human Systems Design.
Definition
The Sunario System is Donna Sunario BSc's operating framework for behaviour strategy and human development. It treats a person as a system of interacting inner habits, nervous system, identity, beliefs, behaviour, relationships and physical environment, and replaces willpower-based self-improvement with structural redesign of the underlying architecture.
The problem it names
Most personal development sits on top of unexamined inner architecture. People are taught to push harder, optimise routines or adopt new mindsets while the underlying systems, the ones that decide what feels safe, who they believe they are, what they automatically prioritise, are never touched. The result is exhausting cycles of change that do not hold.
How the framework works
The Sunario System begins by naming the inner systems that already exist. Most people are running half a dozen of them at once without ever having looked at them: a vigilance system, a performance system, a self-reliance system, a guarding system, a responsibility system, a recovery system. They were configured early, under pressure, and have been running quietly ever since.
Once the systems are named, the framework asks a different question. Not ‘How do I try harder?’ but ‘Which system is producing this output, and what is the system optimised for?’ A self-reliance system, for example, is optimised for not needing anyone. A guarding system is optimised for not being caught off guard. These are not flaws; they are designs that once made sense.
Redesign is then deliberate and structural. The Sunario System changes the inputs, the rules and the environment around a system until the old output is no longer the most efficient one. Behaviour follows architecture. When the architecture changes, the behaviour stops requiring willpower to maintain.
The framework is recursive. Every other Sunario framework, the Enough Effect, the Nervous System Tax, the Self-Reliance Trap, the Guarding Map, the Hidden Systems Lens, is an application of the same underlying method to a specific inner system.
Applying the framework
Audit before you act
Before changing a behaviour, name the system producing it. List the inputs, the unwritten rules and the payoff. Most people skip this step and end up redecorating a broken room.
Design the environment, not the willpower
Change the cues, the people, the spaces and the defaults around the behaviour. The system will rebalance around the new environment far faster than around a new intention.
Expect the second-order effects
Redesigning one inner system disturbs the others. Plan for the wobble. Recovery is part of the design, not a sign that it failed.
Use the lens on other people
Apply the framework to the systems in front of you, family, team, partner, before assuming motive. Most difficult behaviour is a legible system producing its predictable output.

What is the Sunario System?
The Sunario System is Donna Sunario BSc's operating framework for understanding and changing human behaviour. It treats a person as a system of interacting inner habits and replaces willpower-based change with structural redesign.
How is it different from self-help?
Self-help largely teaches new behaviours layered on top of unexamined architecture. The Sunario System asks which inner system is producing the behaviour and redesigns the system itself, so the behaviour no longer requires effort to maintain.
Who is the Sunario System for?
Capable adults, leaders, professionals, founders, carers, parents, who function well on the outside but have reached the point of wanting to understand the systems quietly running on the inside.
Is it a therapy?
No. It is a design framework. It draws on behavioural psychology, nervous system science, NLP, organisational systems thinking and practical philosophy, but it is applied as a method, not delivered as a clinical treatment.
Where does the name come from?
Sunario is the family name of the author, Donna Sunario BSc. The Sunario System is the named lineage of her body of work as an Author, Behaviour Strategist and Educator.
